In March, ENI chief executive Claudio Descalzi told Lusa that gas production at the Mamba oil field in northern Mozambique is expected to begin by 2024, with ExxonMobil, the project partner, expected to make the final decision after the summer.

In addition to the ENI consortium, the Rovuma basin is also hosting a consortium led by US-based Anadarko, which will announce its final investment decision next week in Maputo.

Some districts near infrastructure set up by multinationals involved in natural gas projects in Cabo Delgado have been the target of armed attacks by unidentified groups since October 2017.
