Technology group Wartsila has secured an equipment contract from an undisclosed company for two new roll-on / roll-off passenger (RoPax) ferries.
Being built at the Guangzhou Shipyard International (GSI) yard in China, the new RoPax ferries will feature a comprehensive package of Wartsila solutions.
The €30m order has options for an additional two vessels.
According to the contract, the company will provide four Wartsila 46 main engines, four Wartsila 20 auxiliary engines and two hybrid V-SOx exhaust gas cleaning systems for each vessel.
Wartsila Marine Power Solutions vice-president Stefan Nysjö said: “This is a very significant contract that, once again, emphasises Wartsila’s leading position as a total solutions provider to the cruise and ferry sector.
“Efficiency and operational flexibility are the pillars, on which we build our products, with customer value and environmental compliance always as primary goals.
“We have engine manufacturing facilities in China close to the yard, and this local support is another strength as we build global partnerships.”
The two 2500-passenger ferries will replace four existing RoPax ships. Each vessel will be able to accommodate more than 3800 freight lane metres for vehicles.
The company expects to deliver the equipment to the yard at the beginning of 2021.
In September, Wartsila secured a contract to deliver liquefied natural gas (LNG) fuel storage and supply system for two new trailing suction hopper dredgers (TSHDs).
Keppel Offshore & Marine is building the ships for Dutch marine contractor Van Oord.
